Web 2.0 is the name given to how the internet is now being used. Have you ever posted pictures to the internet so family around the country could view them, have you ever posted a comment on a discussion board or blog, or have you ever edited the content of a wikipage? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you have participated in web 2.0.

Around 1995 the internet, web, world wide web, or whatever other name you want to give it, started to become widely used in American households. At first, as many of us already know, the internet was really just a place to go and search for information. As more and more information became available "on-line" our searches became more and more productive.

Web 2.0 is changing the way in which people around the world use the internet. No longer is the internet simply a place to find information, now through the use of web 2.0 tools internet users can contribute to the mind boggling mass of information available. Internet users can find easy ways to communicate and collaborate using web 2.0.

So what does this mean for our students? Businesses and industries are already putting these new tools to work. Our students need to be versed in these new literacies so that they can be competitive. Web 2.0 is changing the way we use the internet for work, for education, and for fun. Check out this site for one of the most comprehensive lists of free web 2.0 applications currently available.
